Chapter 26: The New Big Shot
Some are happy, while others are worried.
As Old Zhou was filled with joy, Zhao Jue was feeling a bit anxious. She sat alone in her office, pacing back and forth uneasily.
Last week, she sent “Flammable and Explosive” to Zhao Yingge. She thought that once this song was out, Zhao Yingge, who shared the same surname, would immediately agree to sign with Starlight Entertainment. But as a week passed, there was still no response from Zhao Yingge, which made Zhao Jue anxious.
It shouldn’t be like this. Even as a non-professional, Zhao Jue could tell that “Flammable and Explosive” was a good song. The first time she heard it, it grabbed her attention, and the more she listened, the more memorable it became.
Therefore, Zhao Jue believed that the quality of this song should be enough to impress Zhao Yingge. However, the lack of response from Zhao Yingge made Zhao Jue doubtful and uncertain.
Was it possible that the song failed to impress her? Or had Zhao Yingge already signed with another company?
Amidst her anxiety, Zhao Jue’s phone suddenly rang. It was the call she had been eagerly waiting for from Zhao Yingge.
Was this a call to reject me? Zhao Jue frowned as she answered the phone.
On the other end, Zhao Yingge’s voice came through, firm and resolute: “I agree to sign with Starlight. Sorry for making you wait so long.”
Zhao Jue was stunned. It wasn’t a rejection?
She quickly regained her composure, feeling overjoyed. In the competition among the three major companies, Starlight had won yet another victory!
“No problem,” she said generously. “It’s important to make a well-considered decision. We’re willing to wait. When do you plan to sign the contract?”
“I’m available anytime,” Zhao Yingge replied earnestly. “Let’s go with the contract you proposed earlier. However, ‘Flammable and Explosive’ must be released as my first single. I hope the company can help with the promotion.”
“Of course,” Zhao Jue laughed. “We’re a company that values efficiency. If you’re available, you can come to the company this afternoon to sign the contract.”
Zhao Jue didn’t want to delay any longer.
“No problem,” Zhao Yingge agreed immediately, then added, “I fell in love with ‘Flammable and Explosive’ the first time I heard it. It’s really perfect for me…”
“Great!” Zhao Jue thought. It wasn’t the song’s fault after all. I knew Lin Yuan’s ‘Flammable and Explosive’ was of such high quality that it couldn’t possibly fail!
“Get ready to head over,” Zhao Jue said, her mood completely transformed, back to her decisive self. “I’ll have someone meet you downstairs, and the contract will be ready before you arrive.”
“Got it,” came the reply.
After hanging up, Zhao Jue finally felt relieved. She sat down, intending to take a break, but before she could settle in, someone knocked on the door.
“Come in.”
“Sister Zhao,” said a male agent under Zhao Jue as he entered, looking a bit excited. “We’ve received a call from Qizhou. They want to invite Jiang Kui to participate in the promotion of the movie ‘Dance of Fish and Dragon’!”
“Jiang Kui?” Zhao Jue was slightly taken aback.
The agent explained, “She’s a newcomer under my management. Recently, she was chosen by Teacher Xian Yu to sing an impression song he composed specifically for the Qizhou animated movie ‘Dance of Fish and Dragon.’ Today, the song was released online, and the response has been very positive. So, Qizhou wants her to promote the movie as a singer.”
Lin Yuan again!
Zhao Jue remembered that Lin Yuan had asked her for a newcomer to record a song. Old Zhou had also mentioned that Lin Yuan completed an order from Qizhou, which must have been this impression song.
“What’s the song called?” Zhao Jue asked, already opening her music player.
“It’s called ‘Big Fish,’” the agent replied.
Zhao Jue nodded, typed “Big Fish” into the search bar, and found the song. She put on her headphones and listened to it.
After listening, she was silent for a long time.
The agent couldn’t help but remind her, “Sister Zhao.”
Zhao Jue snapped back to reality, smiling wryly. “When Lin Yuan wanted to record this song, I didn’t pay much attention. I just gave him a list of newcomers. I never expected the song he wanted to record would be as good as ‘Big Fish.’”
“Nobody expected it,” the agent said with a smile, understanding her surprise. “Besides Qizhou, many brands we have long-term collaborations with have also called, wanting to invite Jiang Kui to their events, specifically asking her to sing ‘Big Fish.’ So, I wanted to consult with you on how to proceed.”
“So…” Zhao Jue looked up. “Jiang Kui has become popular?”
The agent nodded, both excited and emotional. “Judging by the enthusiastic invitations from various brands, Jiang Kui has indeed become popular. Otherwise, who would remember the name of a newcomer? She’s riding on Teacher Xian Yu’s coattails, with an effect comparable to Sun Yaohuo, who debuted with a top spot on the Newcomer Chart. Rest assured, I’ll make sure to manage her well and not waste this opportunity given by Teacher Xian Yu.”
Zhao Jue was the chief agent. The chief agent oversees the company’s agency affairs and generally doesn’t manage artists directly. Those she personally manages are either big names or newcomers she sees great potential in.
Below Zhao Jue, there are many junior agents who mostly manage newcomers. It’s tough for newcomers to get started, so these junior agents don’t have it easy either.
Therefore, every junior agent hopes their newcomer will become popular because only then can they earn money along with their artist!
“Great!” Zhao Jue stood up. Today was a double blessing! First, Zhao Yingge agreed to sign with Starlight; then, a newcomer under her unexpectedly became popular, skipping the newcomer season and gaining fame in such a manner!
Moreover, both of these joyous events were thanks to Lin Yuan! This kid is truly my lucky star!
“Have the publicity department follow up immediately,” Zhao Jue instructed. If a newcomer becomes popular, the company must seize the opportunity. If Starlight can’t capitalize on this, it doesn’t deserve to be one of Qinzhou’s top three entertainment companies.
The talk of “consultation” was just an excuse. The real purpose of this junior agent’s visit was likely to secure company support for Jiang Kui. However, Zhao Jue wouldn’t point this out. Everyone is looking out for their artists, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
“Understood,” the agent replied, his smile growing even brighter. “Thank you, Sister Zhao!”
“Additionally…” Zhao Jue continued, “Jiang Kui must prioritize Qizhou’s schedule. ‘Big Fish’ is a commissioned work from Qizhou, and we need to provide full service. Otherwise, it could affect our company’s reputation. We hope to receive more orders from Qizhou in the future.”
“No problem!” the agent agreed wholeheartedly.
Zhao Jue suddenly felt a bit regretful. “I actually regret letting Lin Yuan go! Keeping him in the artist department would have been fine. Surely, our department could afford him. Now, Old Zhou Ruiming has gained a huge advantage!”
The agent remained silent. Matters between the higher-ups were not his place to comment on. However, Zhao Jue was merely venting. If she had really tried to keep such a promising composer in the artist department, Old Zhou might have complained to the boss.
“Xian Yu…” The agent’s mind started to turn. It seems this person is the new big shot in the composition department… First, he helped Sun Yaohuo debut by topping the Newcomer Chart… Then, he helped my artist Jiang Kui… He’s only been here for two months, and he’s already helped two newcomers rise to fame…
